Vivai Diffusi – Green networks for the protection of water, biodiversity and landscape
Vivai Diffusi regenerates river ecosystems and improves soil permeability through temporary native plant nurseries, paving the way for permanent green spaces that filter runoff. By engaging communities, monitoring impacts, and sharing results, the project reduces pollution and enhances biodiversity. It involves schools, institutions, and businesses in renaturation, fostering a culture of water and landscape care and raising awareness of ecological resilience.
What issue does your project address, and why do you want to tackle it?
We tackle the loss of soil permeability and wetland habitats, diffuse pollution, and fragmentation of ecological systems. Degraded riparian zones—especially near industrial areas like those adjacent to the Laveggio River Park—undermine water quality and life quality. Vivai Diffusi seeks to return space to nature and responsibility to communities, activating systemic, accessible, and replicable solutions to protect water resources and counter climate change effects.
What is your project about and how does it make Switzerland water-wise?
Vivai Diffusi creates a network of micro-nurseries for propagating filtering and riparian plants around waterways, overflow channels, and wetlands. We foster natural water infiltration, reduce pollution, and rebuild resilient ecosystems, while improving the quality and livability of work environments—where people spend much of their daytime. The project combines science, education, and active citizenship to promote a responsible, circular, and water-conscious management culture.
How do you measure your project's success?
Success is measured through biological monitoring (flora/fauna), analysis of chemical-physical indicators (nitrates, phosphorus, agrochemicals), and the involvement of at least 200 people—including citizens, school groups, and company employees. Impact is also assessed by the increase in functional green spaces, their usability (promoting coexistence between people and wildlife), the replicability of the model in other municipalities, and the project’s ability to raise visible and concrete aware
Who are the people behind the project and what is your secret to a great collaboration?
We are a multidisciplinary team working across spatial and landscape design, ecology, planning, environmental education, and civic engagement. The key lies in bottom-up co-design, listening to local contexts, analyzing environmental and social needs, using clear language, setting transversal objectives that engage public entities, citizens, and businesses - while respecting each partner’s skills and diversity.
