AlpMo – uncomplicated and sustainable mobility in Alpine tourist regions

Alpine Mobility develops sustainable mobility services for locals, employees and guests in the Alpine region. Collective mobility services complement the existing public transport system. The aim is to offer mobility from early in the morning to late at night without the need to own a motorised vehicle. The KIMM pilot project including MVP for digital integration is currently running in the Gotthard region. Due to the pleasing demand, we see the scaling of the approach in other Alpine regions as the next important step.

What issue does your project address, and why do you want to tackle it?

The current public transport system in the Alpine region is often very expensive due to low cost recovery contributions and yet has significant gaps. Even in Switzerland as a public transport country, guests and locals in mountain regions are often dependent on their own car. Traffic jams, large car parks and noise, particulate and CO2 emissions in sensitive natural areas are the consequences. Alpine Mobility is convinced that combined mobility concepts and digitalisation can solve these problems in the Alpine region.

What is your project about and how does it make tourism in the Alps future-proof?

Specifically, our concept, which we call «AlpMo», aims to supplement existing public transport with emission-free on-demand transport, car sharing, bike sharing and ride pooling. We are currently working on a digital solution to combine mobility services and enable end-to-end bookable travel chains. In order to increase the positive effects of our pilot project, the tested concept is to be used in other Alpine tourism regions in the Alps in line with demand.

How do you measure your project's success?

The success of our project is reflected in the increasing number of users of the mobility providers in the pilot region and the acquisition of further project partners. Thanks to the electrically powered vehicles from mybuxi and Sponti-Car, almost 50 tonnes of CO2 could be saved in 2023. In terms of quality, the result is better and longer accessibility as well as greater convenience for guests and locals. Thanks to mybuxi, there are now connections until 02:00 am.

Who are the people behind the project and what is your secret to a great collaboration?

Various players from the private and public sectors of the mobility and tourism industry have joined forces in the Alpine Mobility association. They are shaping the mobility of the future via their networks such as openmobility, ITS Switzerland, etc. This network is central to digitally linking the various existing booking systems and making them bookable from a single source. The people behind the project have different backgrounds and are mobility, tourism and business experts. What they all have in common is the motivation to create better offers that create benefits.
