Extinguish the flames, not the planet: a campaign to accelerate Switzerland's transition to PFAS-free firefighting foams
The final goal of the project is a total PFAS ban in Switzerland, and Campax, alongside the Green Party, will exert pressure in this direction. But legislation takes time and we must implement transitional measures to curb the spread of these persistent pollutants as soon as possible. Firefighting foam is a key starting point. The canton of Valais has already switched to PFAS-free alternatives. Our campaign urges other cantons to follow – through petitions, awareness, and targeted actions.
What issue does your project address, and why do you want to tackle it?
PFAS accumulate in our water, soil, food, and ultimately in our bodies. And they are linked to serious health issues, including cancers.
Recent events have underscored the omnipresence of PFAS, leading to growing public concern. Personally, I cannot sit idly by while the contamination spreads. Taking action now not only protects public health, but also prevents exponentially rising clean-up costs. And alternatives already exist in many domains: there is no reason to delay any further.
What is your project about and how does it make Switzerland water-wise?
Firefighting foam is a major source of PFAS pollution due to its high concentration and direct release into the environment – especially in groundwater. The decontamination costs are exorbitant for cantons, which therefore have every interest in making the transition to PFAS-free products. Valais has already. Our campaign builds on its example to incite other cantons to adopt the PFAS-free foam, and drive a nationwide switch – thus protecting water sources and promoting a more water-wise Switzerland.
How do you measure your project's success?
The campaign aims to speed up the transition to PFAS-free firefighting foams in as many Swiss cantons as possible, and help pave the way for a nationwide PFAS ban. Each canton that switches — first for training foam, then for operational foam — marks a concrete success. Another key milestone will be the introduction of PFAS awareness courses for firefighters (to guide them on the safe disposal of used foam).
Who are the people behind the project and what is your secret to a great collaboration?
Campax is the largest Swiss citizens' movement. We campaign on important issues of our time and empower people to start their own campaigns and lead them to success. We are people powered, combining the strength of the community (almost 800,000 people) with the newest digital technology. What guarantees our successful collaboration are our shared values, which make us allies, working together towards common goals: an intact environment, a healthy climate and justice.
